Marcus Brathwaite

Comb Series #4, #6, #9, #10
2017
monoprint
23.5" x 16" each

(b. 1984 –  Brooklyn, NY) In a diverse studio practice that includes printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and drawing, Marcus Brathwaite depicts and disrupts traditional notions of race by exploring the ways objects, individuals, and systems are used and manipulated in society today. He states, “my work is an attempt to understand the unique persistence of African culture through all its permutations, struggle, and beauty.”

Of his “Comb Series," Marcus explains that he “uses the comb as a symbol to represent the complexity of what it means to be an American member of the African diaspora.”

Brathwaite received a BFA in Ceramics from the Cleveland Institute of Art. He has exhibited at several institutions around Cleveland, including Zygote Press and the Praxis Fibers Workshop, and was recently a moderator for a round table discussion at the Sculpture Center. He is currently the Studio Manager at the Sears think[box].

From the nominating artist:

I have seen Marcus’s work in two exhibitions and each time was impressed by the intelligence of the work. Important ideas were explored in the work and the craft of their making was of a very high standard. I chose Marcus so I could learn more about him and see more of his work.
